Indian Railways passengers can now change travel dates for confirmed IRCTC e-tickets online.

In a major passenger-friendly upgrade, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) now allows users to change the date of travel for confirmed train tickets directly through its official online portal and mobile app.

This feature, effective immediately, is open for most reserved categories and is expected to help lakhs of passengers adapt to sudden plan changes without having to cancel and rebook tickets. The move brings Indian Railways in line with practices of leading global transport operators offering greater digital flexibility.

How the New Date Change Feature Works

• Login to IRCTC portal/app and go to “Booked Tickets”.
• Select the ticket you want to modify and choose “Change Date of Journey”.
• Pick a new travel date within the allowed window (generally up to a month ahead, subject to train and class availability).
• Pay fare difference (if any) and nominal date-change fee; e-ticket is reissued instantly.
• No need to cancel original ticket; PNR and identity proof remain valid for the new date.

Key note: The feature is available only if your original ticket is confirmed and the new date is for the same passenger(s)/train/class.

Eligibility and FAQs

• Q: Can I use this for waitlisted or RAC tickets? A: Currently, only confirmed e-tickets are eligible.
• Q: Is the service available for all trains? A: Allowed for most reserved express/mail trains; not available for Tatkal, Premium Tatkal, or local unreserved.
• Q: Can I change to a date already past? A: No, only future train dates with open seat availability.
• Q: Is there a charge? A: A nominal date-change fee and difference in fare, if applicable, will apply.
