Cloudflare Radar Report 2025: Internet Traffic Surges 19% Amid AI Revolution

AI Crawlers Reshaping the Digital Landscape as Post-Quantum Encryption Expands
In a landmark report released today, Cloudflare reveals a 19% surge in global internet traffic in 2025, driven by unprecedented AI crawler activity and the accelerating adoption of post-quantum encryption protocols.

The latest Cloudflare Radar report paints a picture of an internet undergoing rapid transformation. The 19% year-over-year traffic increase marks the most significant growth since the pandemic-era surge of 2020-2021, but with distinctly different drivers.

AI Crawlers: The New Digital Architects

According to the report, AI crawlers now account for approximately 42% of all web traffic, up from just 15% two years ago. These sophisticated bots are no longer simple scrapers but complex systems training next-generation models on real-time web data.

"We're witnessing a fundamental shift in what the web is and how it's used," said Cloudflare's Chief Technology Officer in the report. "AI systems are becoming primary consumers of web content, which has profound implications for web architecture, content delivery, and even how we think about search."

Key Findings from the Report

  • Traffic Growth: Global internet traffic increased by 19% in 2025, with Asia-Pacific leading at 24% growth
  • AI Crawler Dominance: 42% of web traffic now originates from AI training and inference systems
  • Encryption Shift: 35% of secure connections now use post-quantum cryptographic algorithms
  • Regional Variations: Africa shows the fastest growth in mobile traffic at 31% year-over-year
  • Security Trends: DDoS attacks increased in frequency but decreased in average duration

Post-Quantum Encryption Goes Mainstream

The report highlights another critical trend: the accelerated adoption of post-quantum encryption. Following NIST's standardization of quantum-resistant algorithms in 2024, major cloud providers and content delivery networks have rapidly implemented these protocols.

"The timeline for quantum computing threats may be uncertain, but the migration to quantum-resistant cryptography is already underway," notes the report. "We're seeing particularly strong adoption in financial services and government sectors, where data longevity is a critical concern."

Cloudflare's data shows that 35% of HTTPS connections now use post-quantum key agreement algorithms, a remarkable increase from just 5% at the beginning of 2024.

Regional Insights and Mobile Dominance

The growth isn't uniform across regions. While North America and Europe show steady growth of 12% and 14% respectively, the Asia-Pacific region leads with 24% growth, driven largely by India and Southeast Asia.

Mobile traffic continues to dominate, representing 68% of all internet requests globally. In Africa, mobile traffic grew by an astonishing 31%, reflecting both increasing smartphone penetration and improved network infrastructure.

The full Cloudflare Radar 2025 report includes detailed breakdowns by industry, protocol, and security threat landscape, providing an unprecedented view into the evolving architecture of the global internet.
